In Hungary, the level of vitamin a and carotenoids decreases in cancerChanges in the level of vitamin a and carotenoids in the plasma of patients with malignant neoplasms of digestive organs. The staff of the Department of Chemistry, Medical University of Pecs (Hungary) conducted a study of the content in plasma vitamin a and carotenoids in 40 healthy individuals and in 44 patients with adenocarcinoma of the colon, 21 - with stomach cancer, 15 with hepatocellular adenocarcinoma, 10 with pancreatic adenocarcinoma and 8 with esophageal cancer. The study is published in J. Physiol. Paris in 2001. The levels of serum vitamin a and zeaxanthin were significantly lower in all of these groups (except for patients with adenocarcinoma of the pancreas). These results indicate that these micronutrients can be dietary factors prevention (as food "scavengers") of the occurrence of malignant neoplasms of digestive organs..
